Washington, DC – Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO) released the following statement in response to Senator Durbin’s (D-IL) outrageous allegation that one House Republican Leader told the president during a White House meeting, "I cannot even stand to look at you."
“Senator Durbin’s accusation against House Republican leaders is not only outrageous, but a blatant falsehood as well,” said Rep. Ann Wagner. “The senior senator from Illinois should either disclose his source, or retract this bogus allegation immediately and apologize for lying to the American people. The American people are tired of these partisan attacks, and they just want Congress to work together and get the job done.”
During a White House press conference, Press Secretary Jay Carney denied this allegation took place:
QUESTION: Just to follow up on that. In terms of the president talking to Republicans, can you rule out -- there was the number two Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin, said on his Facebook page that someone in recent exchange with the president said he can't even stand, this member of Congress, that he can't even stand to look at the president. Can you say whether that happened?
JAY CARNEY: I will say this, I spoke with somebody who was in that meeting and it did not happen.
