Congresswoman Ann Wagner Sends Letter To VP Harris To Assure Southeast Asian Allies Of U.S. Support
Washington, D.C. – Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Vice Ranking Member Ann Wagner (R-MO), Co-Chair of the ASEAN Caucus, sent a letter to Vice President Kamala Harris regarding the Vice President’s upcoming trip to Singapore and Vietnam. This letter calls on Vice President Harris to assure our allies in Southeast Asia of America’s commitment to support them against Chinese aggression.
Excerpt: “With the recent catastrophic collapse of Afghanistan and evacuation of U.S. military forces, we must unequivocally assure our allies in Southeast Asia of our nation’s firm and unwavering commitment to ensuring their security and providing the resources and intelligence necessary to repel Chinese aggression. It is my sincere hope that you are able to communicate this assurance in no uncertain terms.”
The Chinese Communist Party continues to aggressively expand its power and malign influence throughout the Indo-Pacific, and the U.S. has never articulated a comprehensive strategy for the region. In April 2021, the House unanimously passed Congresswoman Wagner’s Southeast Asia Strategy Act, which requires the State Department to develop and submit to Congress a coherent regional strategy that addresses trade, humanitarian initiatives, diplomatic partnerships, and security arrangements.
