Rep. Wagner on POTUS Decision to Terminate Iran Deal and Re-Impose Sanctions

Press Release

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Ann Wagner (MO-02) released the following statement on President Trump’s decision to terminate the United States' participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran and to re-impose sanctions lifted under the deal.

“From day one, I believed the Iran Nuclear Deal was dangerous and deeply flawed. Despite the last Administration’s assurances to the contrary, three years of sanctions relief for Iran have only empowered the world’s top state sponsor of terrorism. During that time period, Iran has toppled a legitimate government in Yemen, undermined Iraqi democracy, propped up the abhorrent Assad regime, and sold missiles to Hezbollah. The country’s actions pose an existential threat to Israel and other regional allies—and, prior to today’s decision, it was just a few years away from developing the capabilities needed to become a nuclear power.

“I applaud President Trump’s decision to walk away from a deal that has only hurt our interests and those of our allies. It is time to hold Iran accountable for its missile proliferation activities, support for terrorists, and destabilizing regional agenda. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to develop a comprehensive strategy to counter the Iranian threat in earnest. In the meantime, I hope re-imposed sanctions and multilateral pressure under America’s leadership will bring Iran back to the negotiating table.”
