Wagner Praises Signing of Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act into Law

Jan 2, 2020
Press Release

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO) released the following statement after President Donald Trump signed into law H.R. 777, the Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act, her legislation to combat the rape kit backlog:

“It has been almost a full year since I introduced the Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act with Congresswoman Maloney, and I have been fighting every day to pass this legislation and get it signed into law. The Debbie Smith Act should never have been allowed to expire, but now that it has become law, law enforcement will again have the resources they need to reduce the appalling rape kit backlog that has allowed too many violent perpetrators to go free. I thank all the survivors and advocates who have worked with us to get the Debbie Smith Reauthorization Act over the finish line, and I look forward to building on this vital legislation so survivors of sexual assault receive justice.”
