Wagner Statement on Senate Democrats' Inaction on Student Loan Interest Rates

Jun 28, 2013
Press Release

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO) released the following statement in response to Senate Democrats failing to act to stop student loans from doubling:

“I am extremely disappointed that the Senate adjourned before passing a plan to stop student loans from doubling.  This self-made crisis is a reflection of Washington dysfunction and the only victims are thousands of students who just want a shot at securing a brighter future.  Rather than passing a long-term solution to prevent these rates from doubling, Senator Harry Reid decided simply not to act.

“The president and House Republicans agree on the need for a long-term, market-based solution that will stop Washington politicians from arbitrarily setting student loan interest rates.  That’s why the House passed in a bipartisan fashion and approved the Smarter Solutions for Students Act, which was largely based on a proposal put forth by President Obama earlier this year.

“It’s time to stop playing political brinksmanship with the American people and come together to get the job done.  The House has acted and it’s past time for Senate Democrats to follow suit.”
