Wagner Video Statement on the Passage of the SAVE Act

May 20, 2014
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Ann Wagner (R-MO) issued the following video address after the House passed, in overwhelming bipartisan fashion, the SAVE Act:

Remarks as prepared for delivery:

Hi, this is Ann Wagner, and I represent Missouri’s 2nd District in Congress.

I wanted to provide you a special update on legislation near and dear to my heart.

Today – with an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, the United States House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act.

This life-saving legislation will amend the Federal criminal code, and give prosecutors the tools they need to investigate and prosecute those who knowingly advertise sex slavery.

It doesn’t seem that long ago when we started this journey.

With rays of light showering down upon us, beneath the historic dome at the Old Court House – we took the first step to ending modern-day slavery.

At first no one said passing the SAVE Act could be done.

That powerful special interest groups would never allow websites like backpage.com to stop profiting millions of dollars from the advertisements of sex trafficking.

But they didn’t understand how strong our survivors and advocates are.

They didn’t understand how powerful the current of change would be.

That Members of Congress would take the SAVE Act to their constituents all over country: from Charlotte, North Carolina; to Lake
Forest, Illinois; and all the way to the sandy beaches of San Diego –raising awareness and education to end the scourge of human trafficking.

The passage of the SAVE Act is a testament to your commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society.

However, our work is not yet done.

We must remain vigilant to ensure that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid takes up the SAVE Act for a vote.

With your support we can make that happen.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone who gave us strength during this process.

This is for all of the survivors and innocent angels in search of hope.

Your strength gives us strength, your resolve gives us inspiration and your steadfast commitment to ending sex trafficking gives us hope.

Thank you for your courage.

This fight is for you.
