Rep. Wagner Statement on President Obama's Sunday Address

December 7, 2015

Congresswoman Ann Wagner released the following statement in response to President Obama's Sunday evening address concerning the San Bernardino shooting, ISIS and gun control:

"Last night, President Obama spoke to the nation about the threat posed by terrorism. Instead of charting a new course for victory over ISIS, the President chose to double-down on years of failed counterterrorism policy in the Middle East. President Obama's address amounted to a reassertion of the same counterterrorism strategy that has seen ISIS seize control of large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria and use that territory as a base from which to inspire and direct attacks like the ones we have seen in Paris and San Bernardino.

"Our number one responsibility in Congress is to keep the American people safe. It is time for the President to end the equivocation and half-measures and instead put forward a comprehensive and aggressive strategy to destroy ISIS. If we do not act decisively to impede the threat of Islamic extremism to our homeland, then the acts of terror will continue against the United States and our allies. The enemy is adapting its plots to defeat our security measures, and the President has failed to present a flexible strategy to counter the terrorists increasingly dangerous tactics.

"As Americans, we have a responsibility to stand up to our enemies and work as a force for good in the international community. We must not downplay the real and present danger posed by ISIS and the President has a responsibility to the American people to defeat them."
