Wagner Statement on State of the Union
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO), Chair of the Financial Services subcommittee on Capital Markets, released the following statement on President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address:
“Joe Biden’s Presidency has been one defined by crisis: economic crisis, border crisis, national security crisis, and a crime crisis. The costs of everyday goods and services are rising, and the price to fill up your gas tank is breaking the bank for families. We have to work on priorities like American energy independence to help ease this economic disaster and lower gas prices for families. Illegal immigrants continue to stream across our border, drug traffickers are smuggling in deadly fentanyl into our neighborhoods, and rising crime rates have made mothers and fathers fear their neighborhoods are no longer safe for their children. Joe Biden may try to claim so-called accomplishments tonight, but how can you brag when police officers are being shot, families are struggling, and people are scared to walk the streets? I am calling on the President to admit his failures of leadership and work with Republicans on commonsense legislation to secure our border, support our law enforcement, and protect our communities from dangerous drugs like fentanyl.
“Just a few days ago I saw the Chinese spy balloon Biden allowed to traverse the entire country. It was crucial that we respond with strength, but Biden’s weakness and indecision sent a dangerous signal to our adversaries like Iran, Russia, and North Korea. That was a crisis of national security.
“Our federal debt is sky-high, and President Biden must be willing to negotiate with Republicans on the debt limit. Let me be clear: the United States cannot and will not default on our debt, and we will not be cutting Medicare or Social Security. Joe Biden should admit tonight that Democrats have created a spending crisis and he must pledge to work with us on a new framework that exercises fiscal restraint and commonsense cuts.”
