Wagner Votes for HALT Fentanyl Act

May 25, 2023

The legislation would give law enforcement better tools to combat the opioid crisis

Washington, D.C.  – Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO), Chair of the House Suburban Caucus, released the following statement after she voted for the HALT Fentanyl Act, legislation that would permanently make Fentanyl a Schedule 1 drug:

“The deadly impact of Fentanyl has been felt in communities all throughout Missouri, tearing apart families and taking the lives of too many victims.  Addiction is a scourge on our nation, and we must give law enforcement the tools they need to get these drugs off our streets.  The HALT Fentanyl Act does just that and ensures fentanyl and its related substances are permanently classified as schedule 1 drugs, while also supporting better research into the effects of fentanyl so our health professionals and first responders can more effectively treat those at risk.

“While more can be done to stop the flow of illegal drugs across our southern border, it is also important to address the drugs that are already here causing tragedy after tragedy in our neighborhoods.  Last year, over 109,000 people died of drug overdoses and fentanyl poisonings are the top cause of death for adults under 49. It is urgent we take action now to prevent even more.”

Congresswoman Wagner also recently voted for the Secure the Border Act, legislation that would help stem the flow of illegal drugs across our border.
